What do Solo Travellers do?

So, this is one question that I used to wonder about a lot. Growing up watching YJHD, I had a clear picture of what solo travellers do? But the answer to, what should I do as a solo traveller was something even I didn’t have the answer to. And like every other kid, I tried to read books and watch more movies that would tell the answer to the question. Alas, I didn’t find the answer.

So, what do solo travellers do? Well, anything and everything that they want. You see, the whole idea of travelling solo is to set yourself free from the strict schedules we follow every day. To put it in simple words, a solo traveller does anything and everything that they want!

But what difference does it make if you put on your hiking shoes travel solo and go out with your friends? Well, let me tell you the whole magic of solo travel!

What is the Magic of Solo Travel?

The biggest difference I found while travelling solo, apart from the freedom to decide the itinerary or even ditch it, is that I was no longer the person I was expected to be. I was not thinking about how would my friends react if I made a mistake while navigating the map.

Or if I forgot to get the water bottle from the last pit stop. I was free to take the wrong turn, or even better take the road less travelled. Miss one turn, the two more, three more. As long as I was feeling happy, it was alright!

But with that being said, if you are a woman travelling solo, it does come with its challenges. After travelling on my own with strangers, who became my chosen family (aka friends), there are a lot of things I learned, especially in the safety department.

Before I give you the list of things you need to carry, I want to tell you that there have been so many people I have met that have cared for my well-being wayyyy more than I have. During the trip and even after. I have been on trips with guys who have protected me and other female travellers like soilders.

All because they knew that some places are’t that safe for women, they didn’t scare me. Instead they showed how platonic friends are supposed to be. And for that I am really grateful!

While this is ture, so many female friendships that I have formed while travelling have shown me what uncompetetitive, protective and genuinely caring friendships are supposed to be like. Some of us where there to take a breather, some to explore what lies beyond those mountian, while some travelled to heal their broken heart.

Whatever the reason was, the magic of solo travel was still the same. The freedom to be who you want to be. Mask off. You get to be sad. You get to be happy. You get to be whoever you want to be. Play music and dance till the sun is out. Go to the beach in the morning to catch the sunset. Take the wrong turn. You get to decide.

Must Have Things for Safe Solo Travel for Women

While solo travelling is an amazing experience that everyone should experience, there are a few things you need to keep handy. Here’s a checklist of must-haves for a safe solo travel experience, that I live by. Whether you’re exploring the vibrant streets of India or jet-setting to other destinations this list has got you covered.

  1. Essential Travel Documents: Always keep your passport, visa, and identification in your backpack, preferably in a waterproof pouch.
  2. Carry Cash, Credit and Debit Cards: While travelling to remote locations in India make sure you always have some cash with you. As for international travel destinations, carry some local currency apart from your credit card, and a backup debit card. It is advisable to hide your emergency cash in small amounts in your backpack, or travel bag as well.
  3. Mobile Phone, Power Banks: Always make sure your phone is fully charged and has local emergency numbers and important contacts. Along with this, keep a power bank for battery backup
  4. Backpack with Locks: One of the most helpful and practical advice I received was, to get a a lockable backpack that keeps your belongings safe on the go. Now this can be your carry-on luggage, or if you are backpacking your sack. Make sure you have the option to lock your bags in which you will keep your essential belongings.
  5. Self-Defense Items: Get a small, pocket-sized pepper spray. However, if you are going on a hike, you should get a personal alarm with a built-in flashlight that you can use if you are ever in danger.
  6. Reusable Water Bottle: Travel sustainably and stay hydrated while reducing single-use plastic waste by carrying a reusable water bottle with you!

Another thing that I would recommend investing in is travel insurance. If you are planning to travel extensively, consider investing in comprehensive travel insurance. This will give you peace of mind so that you can wander on without any worries!

My final thoughts

While solo travel might seem scary for a lot of people. But take this from an introvert who found her true voice because of solo travelling adventures. If you don’t feel bold enough to go on a long adventure on your own, start with small trips. Go out and explore new places on weekends to get comfortable being in your own company.

And when you feel like the mountains are calling, or that the beaches seem too pristine to be sitting at home, book that trip. Take that flight even if you feel butterflies in your stomach. Let this nervous, excited feeling help you drive out the sound of your fears!
