Travel Tales with Apurva

For the conscious explorers and slow travellers!

Goa? Slow, Soulful Travel? Yes, here are the best picks!

As the post-pandemic experiential boom is finally settling, and we are realising the effects of climate change, it is just as important to change our travelling habits, right?

I know Goa isn’t the ideal place for opting for slow travel, but it offers you way more than just “lively nightlife, casinos, booze, beaches and carnivals”. And honestly, as I am getting older, I am gravitating more towards travelling and doing things I really enjoy. It’s fun to go out dancing, but so is catching the sunrise at the beach, and breakfast.

I mean, if we want to keep experiencing breathtaking sceneries and the magic they do to our soul, conscious, slow travel is necessary too.  So, if this is where you are at, too, here’s a recommendation guide for your next trip to Goa- Slow travel edition. 🏖️😎

1. No-plans beach day at Morjim

Unlike the party beaches of North Goa, Morjim is a haven for those who prefer serenity over sound systems. The wide expanse of soft sand and gentle waves makes it the perfect place for sunrise strolls and quiet journaling sessions.

And if you’re lucky (and patient), you might spot Olive Ridley turtles that come to nest here. 🐢The locals are protective of this delicate ecosystem, which makes your visit feel even more special. While you are there, you obviously need to sip on a fresh, tender coconut from a beachside shack, and instead of rushing off, and just… stay. Let time stretch as you watch the tides play their rhythm.

As the evening rolls in, settle at a beach café. Order Goan fish curry or a plate of rawa-fried prawns, or Bebinca ( for all the people who can have deserts all day) and watch as the sun dips lazily into the Arabian Sea.

2. Dancing with Butterflies

If you want to experience what it’s like to be a Disney princess/ prince who is swamped with butterflies, head over to the Mystic Woods, the Butterfly Conservatory of Goa in Ponda. This space feels like stepping into a fairytale. Butterflies of every hue, from bright blues, fiery oranges, and delicate whites, surround you like confetti tossed by nature. 🦋🦋🦋

The conservatory isn’t just a photo-op but a gentle reminder to pause and notice life’s tiny, fleeting joys. Spend the morning wandering slowly, watching these winged wonders rest on flowers or dart playfully in the air.

In the afternoon, you can explore the temples and spice plantations around Ponda at an unhurried pace. Let the scent of cardamom, pepper, and nutmeg linger on your senses as you sip freshly brewed masala chai under the shade of coconut palms.

3. Chasing waterfalls and sunsets (Quite Literally)

Next on are Goa’s waterfalls, which are the stuff of postcards, but trekking to them gives you an entirely new perspective. One of the things you can do when in Goa is take out your walking shoes and set out for a waterfall trek. Options like Tambdi Surla, Kuskem, or any of the hidden and secluded gems near Chorla Gha are sure to steal your heart.

Here’s a pro-tip for slow travellers: don’t just snap a selfie and leave. Carry a small mat, maybe even a book, and let the soundtrack of rushing water be your playlist for the day. Dip your toes into the icy-cold pools, breathe deeply, and let nature do its quiet magic.

You can return by late afternoon, just as the sun is setting, too. Take a quick nap and then end your day with a hearty Goan thali, which is a deadly combo of rice, sol kadi, fish curry, veggies, and pickle that tastes like sunshine in a jar.

If you are a vegetarian, take the vegetarian thali available to skip the chicken curry/fish curry options. And please skip the quick snack options like poha, vada sambar, as Goan food is all about hearty, healthy meals!

4. Artisanal Market Hopping

(Image courtsey- itsgoa. com)

Goa’s artisanal markets and fairs are where the real magic happens. From the buzzing Mapusa Friday Market, pop-up art fairs in Panjim to the flea markets at Arpora or Anjuna you’ll find handwoven baskets, quirky jewellery, colourful textiles, pottery, and indie designers showing off their craft. 📿🖼️

Take your time to talk to the artisans. Every piece has a story, the necklace made from sea glass, a hand-painted tile inspired by Azulejos, or an organic jam cooked in someone’s backyard kitchen.

As for stay options, in Morjim Zostel is a great solo-travel and budget friendly option. Whereas, if you want to spend more for a luxury experience, you can also check out Red Thread Morjim.

I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that Goa’s magic lies in its contrasts of wild parties and whispered silences, crowded lanes and hidden trails, roaring waves and still lagoons. So the next time you think of Goa, skip the checklist. Instead, pack your lazy sundress, leave your watch behind, and let Goa unfold, one slow, soulful day at a time.
